About improvisation

Good evening!

So today I’m writing late because I finished up quite late today due to the Improvisation Night we just performed and guess what, today’s topic is improvisation!

So what’s improvising? Improvising is creating or performing dance in this case without any previous rehearsal and spontaneously coming up with movements and developing them without a prior coaching. It let’s you explore your creativity as a dancer and it also allows you to get to know your own movement pattern and style.

I’ve been doing improvisation for a very long time. Of course everyone can improvise but in this case I mean improvisation classes. This lessons are meant to give you extra tasks and tips to get your improvisations to be more successful frequently. This means that you’ll be able to use improvisation moments on the future or simply get to know yourself better from making different tasks that let you explore completely different flows, attitudes and feelings.

Back in Spain I had several teachers all with very different approaches. I went from basic improvisation based on acting to improvisations of minimal movement and also got into partnering improvisation being this last one the most difficult one for me.

Tonight though it was about showing different tasks that our teacher proposed and although we didn’t dance too much because we were all years together I must say that’s always interesting to see everyone’s personal feelings when dancing and how they approach the tasks.

The best of improvisation is that once you lose your shy side it can be very enjoyable. But that has a bad side as well and it’s that you depend on your inspirational days.

I explain: you know when artists say that «inspiration came to me and i was able to make this wonderful work»? Well this is very real and when you’re stuck creatively you use your resources that work and try to save it.

That’s why there’s improvisation lessons, to get you active and solve quickly the moments when you might not be so enlightened.

Obviusly, I get those moments very easily because I still need to learn a lot but that’s why I think they’re vital lessons for a future professional dancer because this gives you freedom and fast answers when asked to dance anything.

Every improvisation night is a mystery and sometimes it can go very well and some other times not so much, but that’s also the magic of improvisation and you can learn from it every time no matter the result.

To finish up this short post I’ll explain this little improvisation experience I got to enjoy last year.

Our teacher decided to form a group of persons to participate into this improvisation project that he had in mind in collaboration with musicians for the Heidelberger Frühling festival that they celebrate in Heidelberg every spring season.

It was all based over improvisation but we set a structure that allowed us to explore deeper and deeper into every task creating almost a story line. It was all based around love and relationships, theme I think it’s always likable by the public because it gets them close to the dancers. The musicians were great as well and we created a very nice atmosphere during the creative process.
When performance came I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous, but it actually went very good and it was a very enjoyable experience. The public really enjoyed it and it was the first time I got to perform just improvising.

Anyway, maybe we’ll get to do another improvisation night before this school year finishes and I’ll try to take some videos and pictures to illustrate better how this evenings are presented.

I’m sorry that this one is a short post but I hope you enjoyed it anyway!

I’ll see you tomorrow!

Love,

Muriel
