Good morning!
Today I write to you after a performance yesterday of the ballet Romeo and Juliet from Sir Kenneth MacMillan and that's what I'm going to tal to you about today!
Starting from the top, in my school in Germany we have the opportunity to work with the company that runs my director: the Staatsballett Karlsruhe. We work as apprentices for some productions as corps de ballet and this year's production was Romeo and Juliet.
When I saw that I was casted for it I got very excited as Romeo and Juliet has always been one of my very favourite ballets and participating as corps de ballet was a wonderful opportunity.
We started rehearsing in the end of October of last year with the repetitéur Julie Lincoln and I must say that it was a bit of an intense rehearsal time because the premiere was in November 28th. So not so much time to learn it all but I knew we could all make it.
It's not a very complicated piece in terms of technique as corps de ballet is based in character dance (specially the ball scene is really "chilled") but precisely because of that they were very pushy about the presentation, the epaulemant, the character that we were representing.
While this was happening, we could meet all members of the company although we already knew some of them because they were students some years ago in the school.
Now going into the performance; yesterday who danced the principal roles were Harriet Mills (who has a beautiful blog where she explains her ballet carreer) and Juliano Toscano. For me, all casts were wonderful but in this case, both of them fit the part very very well and I hink they complement each other perfectly.
For us it's become a bit of a routine to go an perform but in the good sense. We're never nervous anymore and this helps to concentrate well but also have the best time on stage!
My favourite section to dance it's always de beggining of Act 2 when the prostitutes come to steal our man and we dance this section as a small "fight" with them. It's just quite funny all the acting we get into but no one has actually a set partner for the whole ballet so it's funny thinking that I get "jelous" for at least six different man that I dance with during this ballet.
All in all, even with the late night trains, the long rehearsals and the pressure that went in for the premiere, I'm enjoying it very much and I can't believe that we just have two more to go. I'll probably miss it more than I'm expecting.
I hope you enjoyed this short post and I'll be looking forward to your feedback down in the comments! Have a beautiful Friday and I'll see you tomorrow!
Love,
Muriel
