Hair care and easy bun tutorial

Good afternoon!

How are you? I just finished a small yoga session that it was meant to take the stress away and I must say that I really enjoy this moments and that they help me focus and be more calmed with my inner self. I follow Yoga with Adriene’s tutorials; she has a lot of different yoga videos with different lengths and topics and she has a very calmed and nice voice that is very easy and pleasing to exercise with.

Now let’s jump into today’s topic. Today I’d like to talk to you about hair care and how to do a basic ballet bun for everyday class.

I’ve always been blessed with a nice, thick and strong hair but due to the use of several abrasive hair products such as hairspray, gel and too many bobby pins, my hair started to lose its natural shape and strength.

There was a time when in third year of conservatoire I started losing a lot of hair when brushing it. I must say that in that time my teacher was quite obsessed with very neat and perfect buns, so everyday I was spraying and pulling my hair very tightly to have this beautiful buns she was asking for. The problem with that is that although they looked gorgeous, my hair, or any other hair actually, can’t handle daily damage like that and I went to visit a dermatologist who told me that I could use a specific shampoo and liquid that I would apply every night to prevent hair loss and encourage its growth.

This is how I used to do my buns every single day.

This two products were the ones
I was using during the hairloss treatment

After about six or seven months of using this treatment, although it worked quite well, I saw that the hair loss stopped but my hair was quite damaged with split ends and dry, sad hair. And I decided to make a big change: cutting it all off!

I know, crazy, right? A dancer with short hair! What will you do without a bun?

Well, I was careful enough to make a fake bun out of my natural hair that I still keep it with me because I know that I’ll probably cut it short again sometime. Also, I really wanted to go very short inspired by Natalia Osipova at the time and I’ll never regret it.

This was the look I was trying to get

In here it had already grown a bit

It was the best time for my hair and it grew up so healthy and nice that I would do it again without a doubt. Actually, maintenance was the easiest as I could wash it without worrying about hairdryers and wake up in the morning and just walk out the door without any extensive brushing, well, that was a blast.

Anyway, I decided to let it grow again cutting it maybe once a year to refresh the ends and it arrived a moment when I decided to dye my hair. I was a bit bored of my plain dark brown hair and I thought that changing it up would be great. And I decided to go red. I did that last year as one of my birthday presents and I was (and I am) in love with the change.

I couldn't be more in love with it!

From the very beginning, my hairdresser used very good quality products without any kind of abrasives, alcohols or silicons that could damage my hair. Because I did henna treatments before (specially in summer time) she was a bit scared that the dye would react badly (usually fresh henna treatments and dye make your hair turn green, which is not always pleasing) so she tried a small section first and it worked perfectly. She’s a great hairdresser because with just one picture from Pinterest she got the perfect color and the perfect look in the end. I was completely in love.

Now I just keep the color with a conditioner that she gave me from Revlon that has my exact color dye and this past Christmas she recommended me an additional conditioner from a vegan brand called Actyva from Kemon that oh man, that is an extremely good quality product. Using less than a two cents coin quantity of product you cover your full hair and in about three times of use you can see a difference in your hair: it becomes shinier, fuller and healthier.

I also decided to use natural shampoos as I know that the renowned brands usually have tons of alcohols and silicons that makes you feel like it actually cleaned your hair but actually it just took out the superficial dirt and left you with a full layer of silicons that make your hair shine for about a day. Natural shampoos, at least for me, make my hair grow healthier and they clean it better and the best of all, I don’t need to use as much product! So it actually ends up being cheaper than a famous branded shampoo!

and it works very very well!

And here is where the bun comes in. Deciding to keep care of my hair obliged me in a way to be very careful with which bun style was I going to make every single day and I decided to go with the natural shape my hair has.

I have a natural side part so I just use that partition to mark how I’m bringing my hair into a pony tail. I usually remark well the line with a fine comb just to make it a bit more neat. When my hair is very clean and rebel I use a tiny bit of water to brush my hair back and make it a bit more clean looking.

Once I have my hair in a low pony tail I start twisting my whole pony tail making it look like a roll. The tighter, the better, but I don’t over do it to much, just enough so that I feel it’s going to hold it’s shape once I pin it, more or less.

Once it’s rolled I place the roll right around where my hair tie lays forming a rounded shape and hiding the ends underneath this doughnut shaped bun.

I then start pining. Some of my friends use only eight pins but I don’t have a certain number of pins that I use. It depends on how clean and how rebel my hair decides to be.

Once it’s all pined I use some flat pins to keep the sides under control and keep the hair out of my face.

That’s it! Easiest bun and it saves you from an emergency anywhere at any time. Classic, simple and yet elegant. If you have very fine hair I might recommend to use a hair net but I personally don’t really use it unless it’s a performance or an exam time.
