Hello
there!
So I
know I said you would have a double post yesterday but I think you’ll
understand: when on holiday, you also try to enjoy as much as
possible the time spend in your destination and how wouldn’t I
enjoy such destination as home?
Being
with family and friends and just being in Barcelona is always a blast
and I can’t really spend any time in vain!
Anyway,
this second post that would’ve been published yesterday, will be
shorter and it will be about a gala I went to on Sunday afternoon. It
was a gala organized by one of my former teachers, Marisa Yudes, and
she brought several Catalan dancers into the same stage to share
their talent and elegance back home even if it was just for a
weekend.
Before
I comment anything about the show I want to explain why all of them
are not working in Barcelona or even in Spain.
Unfortunately
in this country, culture is not well supported by the government and
they want people to believe that there’s not even a small interest
in it. By doing that, they give an excuse to not support economically
theatres, orchestras, choirs, ballet companies and even museums.
Actually most of the museums in Spain are supported privately by big
business or patrons that believe in art and culture in general.
Ada Gonzalez, one of the dancers that participated in this gala
That
brings a very high price to pay for those who want to commit their
lives to art and its that most of them need to go away from their
home countries in order to find a job.
I find
that heartbreaking, specially knowing that there’s so many talented
artists in this country and that they need to go away in order to
live. Art is an unstable job but it gives so much to those who are
committed to it. As I said in my latest post, art is fulfilling for
the makers and the audiences as it tries to awake our senses, open
our minds and allow ourselves to feel different emotions through it.
It shouldn’t be as belittled as the governments do because people
actually wants to watch and learn. They are curious about it and want
to enjoy it as well.

Adela Ramírez, another performer of this gala
That’s
why this show was almost sold out. A lot of people came and they were
giving massive applause to the performers.
The
Gala had two parts where different pieces were shown. From Paquita
pas de deux to Spartacus or contemporary pieces, there were great
dancers on stage showing what they live for: dancing.
Mar Escoda. We actually went to school toghether and she's
now about to graduate from the Graduate
Program in Northern Ballet School.
I knew
personally quite a lot of them and it was great to see them perform
again after some time spent away from each other. Especially with
David Yudes (now First Artist with The Royal Ballet) it was amazing
to see his progression. He was already a very talented dancer but now
he’s an exceptional one with a very bright future ahead of him.
I must
say that it was a very pleasant evening, meeting up with some
acquaintances and enjoying dance. I hope that some day I can be
invited to participate in this gala or, even better, I can dance in a
company with all of them and a lot of other Catalan talents in
Barcelona.
Resume of this two galas.
(I only attended the second one)
I hope
you enjoy this short post!
Love,
Muriel
